Fort bij Vijfhuizen is in 1897 ontworpen en is één van de eerste gebouwen in Nederland die van beton gebouwd is. Het gebruik van beton voor verdedigingswerken was noodzakelijk na de uitvinding van de ‘brisantgranaat’, die zo’n vernietigende kracht had dat metselwerk hier niet tegen bestand was.

De taak van dit fort was om de Ringvaart en dijk van de Haarlemmermeerpolder te verdedigen.
