About
Discover the beautiful Zonnehuis at the cozy Zonneplein in Amsterdam-Noord, a monumental location in the style of the Amsterdamse School, hidden in Tuindorp Oostzaan. This former community center dates back to 1932, and its authentic art deco interior still exudes the atmosphere of those years.
Whether in small or large groups, you will feel comfortable. Everything is in perfect proportion with the stage, which makes this hall unique. The Zonnehuis is available every day for receptions, presentations, workshops, and concerts.
Nostalgia and innovation
't Zonnehuis is used for performances, musicals, and concerts, with special attention to creativity, innovation, and talent development. Conferences, lectures, film recordings, TV programs, workshops, and presentations also find their place here. Weddings and dinners gain an extra atmospheric dimension thanks to the nostalgic interior. The smaller Blue Room is often used for (and by) the local community with children's shows, dance afternoons for the elderly, and rehearsals for theater groups and choirs. Both spaces can be rented separately.
Well-maintained and professional
Step into the large theater hall, and the thirties come back to life thanks to the well-preserved art deco interior. Like any good theater, 't Zonnehuis is equipped with extensive facilities, such as theater lighting, sound system, and a stage.
Amsterdamse School and art deco
Like all the brick buildings around it, 't Zonnehuis is built in the style of the Amsterdamse School, with characteristic bricks and sunny yellow accents. The construction of the community center in 1932 created jobs and income for the many unemployed (port) workers. Soon, it became the center of local associations and provided space for sports, theater, and singing clubs. Various local harmony orchestras also practice there. This makes 't Zonnehuis a monument of twentieth-century public enlightenment and the labor history of Amsterdam Noord.
The Blue Room
't Zonnehuis is a versatile location. Many people associate 't Zonnehuis with the impressive theater hall, but the building also has a cozy smaller room, the Blue Room. This room is frequently used by the local community, in line with the building's history. Children's shows, choir rehearsals, and dance afternoons for the elderly, everything happens here. This space is also available for smaller business activities, such as brainstorming sessions and lectures. Additionally, it is perfect as a breakout room when booked in combination with the large hall.
City restoration
Choosing a pearl of Stadsherstel contributes to the restoration of the city and the preservation of cultural heritage. In 1993, 't Zonnehuis was narrowly saved from demolition. In 2002, it came into the possession of Stadsherstel. The beautiful interiors were mostly authentic at that time, but the structure was in a dilapidated state. The national monument has now been fully restored to its former glory.
